A comprehensive guide to the most protective straw bodies in our collection. We hand select each style based on their individual Ultra Violet Protection Factor (UPF) Ratings and made them available in one easy-to-access collection. The results listed below can be applied to styles of similar straw material and color. While we do not recommend wearing our hats in place of sun screen or other protectants, our straw fabrics are a very suitable alternative or extra step to protecting your skin everyday. Our hats have been tested by an independent third party lab.
UPF V. SPF:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
While both have something to do with keeping your skin protected from the sun, they differ in their means of protection. SPF represents a measurement of time in which the skin will begin to redden. You are likely to see SPF on sunscreen, which is providing you with a measurement of time needed to re-apply in order to protect your skin. UPF rating is a measurement of the UV light that passes through clothing or fabric. Many skin-care experts believe clothing shields skin more effectively from UV light than sunscreen.
WHAT DOES UPF STAND FOR?
UltraViolet Protection Factor (UPF).
PROTECTED AREAS // WHAT AREAS ARE BEST PROTECTED IN UPF HATS?
UPF rated hats are great for women and men of all ages. The wider the brim of the hat, the more protection it will provide. The main areas protected are your scalp, hair, ears, face, nose, neck, and shoulders. Wearing UPF hats will not provide protection to uncovered skin that is not being shielded by the hat. Legs, hands, and any exposed skin below the neck will need additional protection.
WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST THREATS OF ULTRA VIOLET RAYS?
The ultraviolet (UV) rays that our skin are exposed to can lead to sunburn, accelerated skin aging and skin cancer.
WHAT PLACES ARE RECOMMENDED TO WEAR UPF SUN PROTECTIVE HATS?
We recommend wearing a UPF rated hat when doing any outdoor activity. This includes sun bathing, activities at the beach, riding a bike, in a car, walking your dog, or enjoying a picnic.
